COUGARFEST 2014
Cougarfest was started by the founding fathers in the early months of 1903. Cougarfest is a recreational activity in which participants take up temporary residence in the outdoors, usually using tents or, when one drinks too much, specially designed folding chairs or adapted shacks for shelter. Cougarfest was at one time only a rough, back-to-nature pastime for hardy open-air lovers, but it later became the standard Memorial Weekend activity for vast numbers of ordinary individuals.
The activities take place at a beautiful area between the Hudson River and an un-named lake. The river was explored as early as September, 1609, it's namesake began his exploration of the river now named after him looking for new transit routes to the Orient. Although no passage was discovered to the Orient, the area turned out to be one of the best fur trading regions in North America.
The Lake and its surrounding watershed encompass a unique region in Warrensburg. Sagebrush, Jeffrey pines, volcanoes, tufa towers, gulls, grebes, brine shrimp, alkali flies, freshwater streams, and alkaline waters comprise an unlikely world at the transition between the Adirondack Mountains and the surrounding woodland area. Pronghorn antelope graze in the wooded hills while yellow-bellied Marmots bask in the high summer sun. Along with the Cougarfest music, spadefoot toads fill the evening air with an endless chorus of croaking while Nighthawks hunt for insects in the fading twilight. Trillions of brine shrimp eat and mate beneath the briny waters of the Lake as Phalaropes feast on alkali flies in preparation for their non-stop flight to South America. Embracing 14 different ecological zones, over 1000 plant species, and roughly 400 recorded vertebrate species within its watershed, the Lake and its surrounding basin encompass one of the Adirondack's richest natural areas.
In this same area, Cougarfest of another kind (what is commonly referred to as "modern C-Fest") started at the Lake in 2003 or 2004 (it's a blur) on an outdoor camp site. Attendees include DB's from the Albany, NY area and come from as far away as the peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Its success was immediate and has been repeated for each and every year since. Other similar festivals may begin to sprout up throughout the country, as many times attempts to duplicate something this AWESOME are made. BUT, as everyone knows, there is only one true Cougarfest!
